At the end of nineteenth century, Africa was opening up as a market for
a number of manufactured commodities and that included a potential for selling
shoes in the continent. All the manufacturers of shoes in England sent their representatives
to Africa to see if there might be an opportunity there for their wares.
After a detailed analysis of the countries in Africa, the
representatives came back and said, "Nobody in Africa wears shoes. So,
there is no market for our products there." And the interest to sell shoes
by these companies stopped there.
The representative from Bata had a different story though. He came back
saying, "Nobody in Africa wears shoes. So, there's a huge market for our
products in Africa!" And that's why sign's promoting Bata appear all over
Africa, even in the remoted of spots. It's whys Bata's shoes are known as the
shoes of Africa.
If you have been long enough in Africa you must have come across the
safari boots. Originally designed in 1939, the desert boots from Bata were made
of the finest cowhide and hand stiched at the Bata factory in Limuru, Kenya.
This original shoe remains unchallenged in its quality and popularity.
In Africa you can find Bata stores in 19 out of 54 African countries.
Dominating the African market, Bata's shops can be found even the
remotest part of Africa.
All of this was achieved because Bata's representative chose to see the
situation in Africa as a glass of half full unlike the other companies'
representatives who saw it as a glass of half empty. Being optimistic about a
situation creates a better world for society.
Now, Bata India is largest retailer and leading manufacturer of footwear
in India.
See the positive side of every situation.
