More than 3,000 years ago, there lived a
king named Saul who ruled the kingdom of Israel. Now, a prophet named Samuel
had heard from God that king Saul would be succeeded by David, a shepherd boy.
The prophet had mentioned the same to David as well. and nobody except the two
of them know of this. As time passed by, David became best friend with Saul's
son, Jonathan. David even told Jonathan about what the prophet had mentioned to
him. But it didn't matter to Jonathan that one day David would be king over Israel
and take his place as the successor to the throne after Saul – that’s how close
they are.
Jonathan would always do what was best
for David. Saul, on the other hand, was jealous of David’s popularity in the
kingdom as whatever David did was successful. Saul wanted to kill David in
secrecy. David noticed the change in Saul’s attitude towards him and started to
fear for his life. He asked Jonathan, “Why is your father trying to kill me and
what have I done make him so angry?” Jonathan was surprised by David’s question
and asked, “How do you know my father wants to kill you? He promised to me that
he would not be mad to you anymore and would never hurt you.”
However, David was convinced that Saul
hated him. So, the two of them came up with a plan that would prove whether or
not David was in real trouble with Saul. The plan was that David would not show
up for an important feast with the king and his family. If the King asked why
David was not at the feat, Jonathan would tell the king that David was
attending a feast with his own family. The hope was to find out whether Saul
would get angry with David for not attending I feast.
After they finished discussing the plan,
David hid in a field and Jonathan returned home to his father. At the feast,
Saul could not help but notice that David wasn’t present. He asked Jonathan, “Where
is David and why is he not here?” Jonathan hadn’t even finished explaining when
Saul became very angry. He was so angry that he picked up his spear and hurled
it at his own son. Jonathan knew without a doubt that David was in real danger.
He told David about what had happened.
David was filled with love and thankfulness
for what Jonathan had done for him. The two friends held each other and cried.
Both of them were aware of what needed to be done – David would have to leave
that place to go far away to be safe. The two friends would be separated
forever! The last recorded words of Jonathan to David were “Do not fear my
father for you are destinated to be king. And I will be second to you. Even my
father knows this.”
In spite of knowing
that David would soon be king over Israel, Jonathan not only protected David
with his own life but he continued to stand by David the very end.
